Take Your Life Inventory
I find it so easy to get trapped in habits and my ways of living, that occasionally, I stop and do an inventory. It may sound a little odd, but life moves so fast that if we do not intentionally take a look at how our habits, relationships, career, health, routines, and joy are going, then how will we know what to add or subtract? Instead, we find ourselves year after year going around the same mountains. It gets exhausting wishing and wanting to change and being trapped in our minds, not knowing HOW.
I am no expert. There are particular mountains I continue to go around, and there are others I got around. For example, one of the mountains I never seem to get around is debt. I always seem to manage to spend more then I earn. This year thanks to Dave Ramsey Financial Peace, I am better than before. Now please know that I have started and not finished this course at least four times (maybe 5) over the last 12 years. I start, it gets too hard, and I quit. Or, I think I’m doing pretty good, so I begin to buy little indulgences for myself and my family, and I’m right back to the beginning of that mountain never really saving and a new credit card.
I’m not saying that we never have unexpected emergencies, and as the owner of a small business of over two decades, things rarely go as planned. All the more reason to get my finances under control! So, I question myself. Why? Why have I prevailed in quitting smoking almost 20 years ago? Why did I never give up on my kids (which have grown into amazing young men by the way- Thanks be to God). Why have I stuck with this man(whom I love more than ever), this marriage for almost 22 years? Believe me, like any good marriage, there were some rough patches, but sticking it out was the best thing I ever did. I have stuck with vegetarianism for 32 years! I have stuck with God.
So, my question is, why am I not debt-free? Some will say I lack discipline. If I lack self-control, how can I overcome so many other areas in my life? The only two things I can come up with is it’s not that important, and I chose not to. I say it is, but do I BELIEVE it is?
They say God works in mysterious ways. I find myself jobless for the first time in my life. (Literally, since I was a kid delivering papers and babysitting) My husband too. We had to close our small salon because of COVID-19. Had I not started taking getting out of debt seriously this last time when I once again signed up for Dave Ramsey Financial Peace, we would be a lot worse then we are. Are we debt free? Heck no. Not even close! But I have my WHY!
Because I never want to be a slave to the lender again.
Proverbs 22:7 (NIV), “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender.”
I’m choosing to break the chains of debt, fully knowing that after or Governor gives the go-ahead, I will have to work harder than I ever have before and choose to become debt-free.
