Psalm 91 Gods Protection Promise
At first read, Psalm 91 seems to offer some hope and a little comfort. Almost like a poem. It tells us that by dwelling in the shelter of The Most High, we will find safety and peace. It makes you feel a little less anxious about the world. But at a closer glance, there is SO much more to this scripture.
First of all, Psalm 91 is a promise. A promise from God. Unlike people, God is incapable of lying. When He says something, He means it. His promises don’t change with His feelings. The Most High is significant. The Hebrew name is El Elyon.
God has many names. This name of God, in particular, speaks to His strength, sovereignty, and supremacy. I have to question myself; how often do I remember this? Do I reflect that God is in control during a pandemic, racism, wildfires, human trafficking, and political unrest? Maybe. I guess I remember in spurts. In between work, family housework, trying to stay healthy and sleep.
The amount of human suffering is multiplying at warped speed. I feel small and insignificant. Psalm 91 tells me otherwise. God tells me I matter to Him. YOU matter to Him. With everything happening in the world, sometimes I feel guilty asking for help. He tells me to seek Him, and He will shelter me, provide for me, and keep me safe. The only thing that gets me through some days is remembering He never lies.
So, what are we to do? How do we fix the brokenness? God tells us to rest in The Shelter of The Almighty. (Him). Society teaches us the opposite of rest. Society teaches us to DO. There are many different ways to reduce anxiety, be healthier, live longer, and create your best life ever. So, then why do more people than ever feel anxious, sad, fearful, and hopeless?
How do you learn to rest in the middle of the chaos? I believe the only hope we have is to understand what God means to rest in Him. This is not about religion. This is about learning to have quiet conversations (prayers) with God a little each day until you become more comfortable with Him.
Ask. Believe. Rest in Him.
He will begin to show you where you are most needed.
No politician can save us from this mess at the end of the day, but El Elyon CAN. If we turn away from selfishness, greed, and hardened hearts and turn towards God and love our neighbors (for real), I believe God will shelter us. If nobody even bothers to pray to Him, acknowledge His existence, supremacy and continues in wickedness, why would He?
1Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Highest
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. a
2I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10no No harm will overtake you. No disaster will come near your tent.
11For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12they will lift you in their hands
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16With long life, I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
