Don’t Let Your Past Stall your Present

Letting go of the past can be a difficult task to achieve. Just when I feel life is going great and I’m gaining momentum in an area, it’s interesting that inevitably something I am not proud of from my past pops into my head—all the way from being a little girl through yesterday.

For years, I would immediately shrink. With my confidence lost, I would begin my downward spiral into a crippling place of doubt and fear. It is incredible looking back now at the time I wasted thinking I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, Christian enough, or worthy enough. It could last weeks, months, and sometimes it would be years before I would try again- if at all. Next, I begin comparing myself to others, and in truth, now I know that most people struggle. Why do we not accept that everyone is entirely different? That is the way we were created! Why don’t we automatically see that as one of the greatest gifts God gave us? That we all have differences- the way we look, think, feel, and act?

Isaiah 43: 18-19

18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

What was the problem? God tells me to let it go. Why could I forgive others, but not myself? I knew God had. I always heard the saying “Forgive and forget.”, why was it so hard to forget?

I started practicing as soon as I recognized a negative thought from my past, that I would replace that thought with a prayer for any persons involved and their families followed by a scripture verse.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 4:8

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.

These are my favorites for this situation. Truly I tell you that this practice has changed my life! Almost instantly, in every case, I have an immediate release of these condemning thoughts and can get right back to where I am in life currently.

No one is perfect except for Jesus, and He knew we would not be able to achieve perfection in this life, that is WHY he had to die for our sin. Every single time I walk in a failure of who I was and not in the victory of who I am, I deny why Jesus had to come in the first place. I also realize if I completely forget how who I was, I may slip back into old habits and behaviors. I’ve learned to recognize these glimpses of regret as a gift to me from God.

Just enough to remember- maybe the people of my past need prayer at that moment, perhaps I need to be more loving in a current situation, or maybe one of my children or a friend is going through something similar. Just because I am forgiven shouldn’t be a license for arrogance or to look down on others, sitting within four walls judging others. Once in a while, I need to be reminded that just because I’m not where I used to be doesn’t mean that I wasn’t once there and only, but for the Grace of God, I am not there now.

Don’t Let Your Past Stall your Present

  • You are not the sum of your past mistakes
  • Pray and ask God for help
  • Don’t fall for the feeling of condemnation if you know Jesus
  • Replace negative past thoughts with a prayer for people that pop into your mind and their families
  • Recite scripture
  • Think about what you can learn from a particular situation
  • Now get back to your life and move on
  • Remember, God created us all differently- embrace it!
