12 Ways To Prepare For The Second Wave of COVID
It’s almost a taboo subject that no one wants to talk about, but I am a realist and believe that a plan can help alleviate anxiety and stress. This time we have some idea it’s coming. There is plenty of toilet paper on the shelves. The very worst-case scenario for stocking up on essentials is that you won’t have to remember to get toothpaste next month! The numbers are climbing, but we are still able to take advantage of getting supplies with ease. This is not a “Doomsday List.” This is an “I don’t want to risk getting sick or my family getting sick when COVID numbers are high trying to get supplies I could have gotten before this mess started again List.”
Your Health and Your Families Health
- Get every family member a flu shot.
- Try to get in any necessary doctor appointments.
- (Mammogram, Yearly exam, Kids orthodontist, yes pets vet visits too! etc.)
- Dr. Fauci said Vitamin D and Vitamin C help your immune system. (Check with your doctor to see how much you can take)
- Eat less sugar!! Sugar depletes our immune system.
- Eat more antioxidants and Super Foods.
Maintenance of your home:
- Roof repairs
- Yard clean up (put away any leftover furniture from warmer days)
- Last mow
Stock up on:
- Cleaning products
- Laundry Detergent
- Paper products! (Yes, Toilet paper!!)
- Health and beauty (toothpaste, shampoo, body soap, deodorant, etc.)
- Tampons! (fabulous how consistent that is even in a pandemic)
- Pet Products
- First Aid Kit
- Baking ingredients
Extra Favorites. (If your family LOVES hot sauce) buy 2 or 3 the next time.
Holiday Products and Food
The holidays will be much different for most of us! That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t celebrate them the best we can anyhow; therefore, this year to give Thanks means more than ever if you have breath in your lungs!
Holidays do not have to cost a fortune! For instance, the best holiday festive napkins, plates, and decorations can come from the Dollar Store!
Assemble Winter Clothes:
- Wash and put into everyone’s closet winter clothes, coats, boots, etc.
- Check that shoes and clothes will still fit kids this year.
- Bring out warm blankets for beds.
- Throws for Living Room
Clean like a Mother! And ventilate!
- Try to crack windows as much as possible to bring in the fresh air.
- Consider air purifiers (if your budget permits) for high traffic areas.
- Besides your weekly cleaning (in my case, Quadrants), get dirty! Go behind that stove, wipe down the greasy cabinets, and GIVE your extra stuff away! When the cold comes, remember those that have nothing. An additional coat, gloves, warm socks are like gold to someone who doesn’t have any.
- Room by room extra cleaning (blinds, light fixtures, wash or vacuum curtains)
- Wash blankets, pillows, etc.
- Trim the fat out of your budget
- Pay any bills you can ahead of time.
- Quit Spending
- Start Saving
Make a Plan with Older Children and Parents:
- Maybe since the winter will be long, there needs to be a 14-day quarantine, and a loved one needs to move in, so they are not alone.
- Maybe that means setting up an area of the house for them to live.
- Have the tough conversations about what the holidays will and will not look like.
- Agree that coming out of this thing healthy is the most important objective for everyone.
Bring back the Game night-
Bring out old games, maybe get a new one (or see if any friends want to swap)
Hobbies- Talk to the family and see if there is one hobby they would like to learn and do over the winter.
Make a Family TV Guide:
With streaming, you have to be purposeful about what you watch. Many shows are not coming back because of COVID, so that you may find yourself re-watching every season of an old favorite.
Make a TV Guide:
For Example, Monday-8PM- Blackish
Tuesday- 8 PM -This is Us
9 PM- Bob and Abishola
Wednesday- 7:30- Disney Movie
This elevates- “What do you want to watch” “I don’t care.” “You?”, kids complaining and mental fatigue.
Better yet, have a family meeting to establish the Family TV Guide.
A Routine for Winter.
If you were like us, when we first went into quarantine, we would work out and be super productive, etc., blah, blah blah. So, that was short-lived. I am older and wiser than I was six months ago. The truth is this is not what any of us would choose! Short of a miracle (and yes, I believe in those!) This winter will be what we make it. A routine will help our mental health. Working into that routine daily exercise will help you keep your immune system more robust.
The good news is that the pandemic won’t last forever! We are closer to being done with it than when we started! It’s sad, and many will read this and think the pandemic is a conspiracy. (We are all entitled to our opinions.) My opinion is that I want to be prepared for Winter 2020. Having prepared for it ahead of time, I believe it will allow me to focus on my loved ones and get through the winter with less anxiety. Bring on the Hallmark movies.
